Developing Healthy Relationships as a Kinship Caregiver
As humans, we are made to co-exist with other humans. While we can survive alone, we cannot thrive alone.
That being said, kinship caregivers face unique challenges when it comes to building and maintaining community and friendships.
Jacob’s Law Ensures Timely Access to Health Services for Foster Children
Jacob’s Law, passed in 2016, ensures ensures current & former foster children have access to timely medical & behavioral health services. In September, @ASANownews hosted a training at our Kinship Dinner, providing our caregivers with practical tools to advocate for the health and well-being needs of the children in their care.
The law establishes the following timelines:
72 hours: Rapid response to a health need (with urgent needs requiring a response within 2 hours)
Persevering as a Kinship Caregiver: When a Short-Term Placement Becomes a Long-Term Change
When you first said yes to stepping in as a kinship caregiver, you may have imagined a temporary detour—something you could manage for a few months while life stabilized for the child you love. But sometimes, that "short-term" commitment quietly stretches into something more permanent, reshaping your future in ways you didn’t anticipate. Whether you’re months or years into this journey, perseverance becomes both an act of love and an ongoing practice.
Cultivating Identity Formation for Children in Your Care

During our March kinship dinner, we took time to discuss how to support the identity formation process for the kids in our care.
